It became less utility and more family orientated and a much more competent and aerodynamic road vehicle. However, in 2017 the third generation landed and left behind the traditional angular design of its previous versions. In 1989, the Discovery started life as a more premium alternative to the agricultural Land Rover Defender and a less expensive alternative to the Range Rover. The Land Rover Discovery is an excellent example of how the term crossover is either becoming meaningless or, depending on your point of view, just how well a company can blend two concepts together. However, the first genuine attempt a crossover showed up in the US in 1980, and that's where we'll start. Most crossovers also either came standard with all-wheel-drive or as an option. In the mid-1990s, automakers started building crossovers to be family-friendly and with enough ride height to take on rough surfaces. A crossover is a car that typically has the everyday practicality of an SUV but sacrifices off-road and towing ability, to varying degrees, to gain the road manners of a traditional on-road sedan or hatchback. There's no official definition for a crossover, but we've mostly come to know it as an SUV style vehicle based around a car's chassis. Then, in the mid-1990s, the crossover as we know it now showed up. SUVs were, and still are, brawny and capable in all conditions, and utility was the keyword in the Sport Utility Vehicle. The SUV came into its own in the late 1980s and early 1990s as, mostly, a more comfortable truck. The concept of the crossover is not a new one, but the marketing term that gave birth to the segment is.

So, what are video auctions telling producers about potential expected Nebraska feeder cattle cash prices in Fall 2021? I answer this by using publicly available data taken from USDA-AMS for the Superior, Northern, Western, and Torrington Video Auctions between Jan 2021 to July 2021. In this article, I review what the video auction and futures market is suggesting what the local cash price for feeder cattle will be in Fall 2021. While both have advantages and disadvantages, they each provide important market information, regardless of if they are used by feeder cattle producers. One of the primary differences between these two forms of contracts is that CME contracts are standardized and video auction contracts can encompass more details about the cattle. The advantage is that the cash price is known before delivery. These are production contracts where the buyer and seller agree on a price for a given set of cattle characteristics to be delivered at a certain month and location. The advantage is that these price signals are available many months in advance of when production is physically sold in the cash market and offer daily price signals. An expected local cash price can be estimated by adding a historically observed basis to the futures price that aligns with the delivery month of interest. These prices, available at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), represent the global demand for feeder cattle. So where do feeder cattle producers go for price information about delivery of feeder cattle in the future? There are two primary market signals. Price (formed at the intersection of supply and demand) is the signal feeder cattle producers respond to about whether to retain or sell feeder cattle. Both increasing the supply of feeder cattle from producers and decreasing the demand for feeder cattle from feedlots can result in lower feeder cattle prices. Worsening drought conditions in the Western United States have caused feeder cattle and cull cows to come to market earlier and higher grain prices due to low stocks-to-use ratios and worsening global corn production have caused a run-up in grain prices lowering a feedlot’s demand for feeder cattle. While there have been positive price movements for feeder cattle, most of the downward price pressure has come over the uncertainty of forage production and higher grain prices. There has been upward price pressure from historically strong retail meat demand and meat exports to China. The feeder cattle market has experienced a significant amount of price variation between March and July. However, these approaches yield very broad ranges for soft tissue parameters in dinosaurs which translates directly into imprecise values for performance estimates like running speed ( Bates et al., 2010). Typically, minimum and maximum bounds are placed on such parameters based on data from living animals ( Hutchinson, 2004a Hutchinson, 2004b Hutchinson & Garcia, 2002) and/or additional computer models ( Bates, Benson & Falkingham, 2012 Bates et al., 2010 Hutchinson et al., 2005 Sellers et al., 2013). These soft tissue parameters are almost never preserved in dinosaur fossils and therefore need to be estimated indirectly. Biomechanical approaches emphasize the well-known scaling principles ( Biewener, 1989 Biewener, 1990) that animals of larger body mass have more restricted locomotor performance because muscle mass scales isometrically, but muscle force, relative speed of contraction and power scale with negative allometry ( Alexander, 1977 Alexander & Jayes, 1983 Marx, Olsson & Larsson, 2006 Medler, 2002).īiomechanical models inherently incorporate anatomical characters (e.g., limb proportions) on which more traditional qualitative assessments are based, but also require quantitative definitions for soft tissue parameters associated with mass distribution and muscle properties. In contrast, more direct and quantitative biomechanical approaches have favoured intermediate ( Farlow, Smith & Robinson, 1995 Sellers & Manning, 2007) or much slower speeds for T. rex, with the latter including within their predictive range an inability to reach true running gaits ( Gatesy, Baker & Hutchinson, 2009 Hutchinson, 2004b Hutchinson & Garcia, 2002). These studies cite the long and gracile limbs of T. rex as a key adaptive feature indicative of high relative ( Christiansen, 1998) and absolute speeds ( Bakker, 1986 Paul, 1998 Paul, 2008), along with possession of large tail-based hip extensor musculature ( Persons & Currie, 2011). Some qualitative anatomical studies ( Bakker, 1986 Paul, 1998 Paul, 2008), including some employing a degree of quantitative biomechanical methods ( Paul, 1998), have proposed very fast running speeds (up to 20 ms −1) and an overall high degree of athleticism for large theropods like T. rex. However, despite a century of research since Osborn’s (1916) work on tyrannosaur limb anatomy there remains no consensus on the most accurate maximum speeds for T. rex, or indeed whether or not its gigantic body size prohibited running completely. The running ability of T. rex and other similarly giant dinosaurs has been intensely debated in the literature ( Bakker, 1986 Hutchinson & Garcia, 2002 Paul, 1998 Paul, 2008 Sellers & Manning, 2007) and features prominently in reconstructions of the lifestyles and carnivorous behaviours of large theropod dinosaurs ( Bakker, 1986 Carbone, Turvey & Bielby, 2011 Farlow, 1994 Holtz Jr, 2008 Paul, 1998 Paul, 2008 Ruxton & Houston, 2003). Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the largest bipedal animals to have ever evolved and as such it represents a useful model organism for understanding morpho-functional adaptations and constraints at multi-tonne body sizes ( Brusatte et al., 2010). rex, and demonstrates the power of multiphysics approaches for locomotor reconstructions of extinct animals. Being limited to walking speeds contradicts arguments of high-speed pursuit predation for the largest bipedal dinosaurs like T. rex-long argued to indicate competent running ability-would actually have mechanically limited this species to walking gaits. Combining these two approaches reduces the high-level of uncertainty in previous predictions associated with unknown soft tissue parameters in dinosaurs, and demonstrates that the relatively long limb segments of T. Here we present a new approach that combines two separate biomechanical techniques (multibody dynamic analysis and skeletal stress analysis) to demonstrate that true running gaits would probably lead to unacceptably high skeletal loads in T. Different studies using differing methodologies have produced a very wide range of top speed estimates and there is therefore a need to develop techniques that can improve these predictions. The running ability of Tyrannosaurus rex has been intensively studied due to its relevance to interpretations of feeding behaviour and the biomechanics of scaling in giant predatory dinosaurs. Although Elliott cites William Faulkner and the American tragic playwrights as touchstones (O’Neill, Williams), it’s more of a mash-up of The Grapes of Wrath and an Appalachian folktale. Seven years later, the technology needed to run Kentucky Route Zero has become commonplace and the story its makers set out to tell has grown into one of the most powerful experiences available in a work of new media art. Given how good an exhibition it is, it is remarkable that Limits and Demonstrations is but an interlude that they had originally designed to help determine if a user’s computer graphics card was powerful enough to load the main story. The choices you’re presented with have different emotional tones, allowing you shape the tenor of the story without restricting your ability to get through it.Ĭardboard Computer released Kentucky Route Zero in installments between 20 as each of its five acts was completed. I was duly impressed with the ways that Chamberlain cleverly pushes the limits of the Unity videogame engine that she uses to create her work. The small but powerful exhibition makes savvy references to the history of media art, with nods to Nam June Paik and Racter, the first artificial intelligence to write a book of poetry. I recently visited Limits and Demonstrations, an online retrospective of Lula Chamberlain’s work. Stuck in the Pioneer Valley where galleries have been shuttered, I’ve had to settle for virtual exhibitions instead. Thanks to COVID, it’s been more than a year since I’ve visited a museum in person, which is an eternity for an art lover. |
